Tag Technologies - Designing and Developing a Tech Startup Website
Project: Tag Technologies – Designing and Developing a Website for a Tech Startup
Client: Tag Technologies, a Tech Startup
Duration: 6 Months
Role: UI/UX Designer, Developer, Shareholder
Website: tagtechnologies.net
Introduction
Tag Technologies is a tech student startup company that specializes in RFID and NFC technologies. As a UI/UX designer, I was approached to manage the creation of their website and other IT-related workflows. During my time with the company, I ended up working as the IT director and invested in the company, becoming a shareholder. I designed and developed their website, including all design details, brand design language, and social media marketing. I also created the backend and developed a system for ordering their services on the website, managing other services automatically.
Problem Statement
As the sole designer and developer for the website, my biggest challenge was juggling my time between other company and personal work while still delivering quality results. Another challenge was that most of the customers were not familiar with technology, so I had to make things easy for them while still marketing the company as modern and cutting-edge to appeal to both business owners and individuals interested in smart tech products.
Users and audience
The target audience for Tag Technologies’ website was mainly business owners and individuals interested in smart technology products. As a tech startup, they were seeking to establish themselves as an innovative and reliable provider of RFID and NFC technology solutions. The website was designed to appeal to both technical and non-technical users, and to communicate the simplicity and efficiency of their products.
To achieve this, I conducted user research to understand the needs and expectations of the target audience. This involved analyzing competitors’ websites and user feedback, conducting user interviews, and gathering data on user behaviors and preferences. Based on this research, I developed user personas to guide the design process.
Roles and Responsibilities
As the UI/UX designer, developer, and shareholder of the company, my responsibilities included:
- Meeting with the client to understand their requirements and goals for the website.
- Creating a design language that would be carried through the branding of the company and social media marketing.
- Developing the frontend and backend of the website, including designing and coding all pages.
- Creating a system for ordering the company’s services on the website and managing other services automatically.
- Testing the website to ensure it was functional and user-friendly.
- Collaborating with the client and other stakeholders to make necessary changes and revisions.
- Providing ongoing support and maintenance for the website.
As a shareholder and IT director of Tag Technologies, I was also responsible for overseeing the company’s overall technology strategy and ensuring that IT solutions were aligned with business objectives.
Scope and Constraints
The scope of the project was to design and develop a website that accurately represented Tag Technologies’ brand and product offerings, while also being user-friendly and easily navigable. The website needed to include information about the company, its services, and an ordering system for those services. It was also important to incorporate a modern and visually appealing design that communicated the innovation and technical expertise of the company.
The primary constraints of the project were time and budget. As a startup company with limited resources, Tag Technologies needed the website to be completed within a reasonable timeframe and budget. To ensure that these constraints were met, I utilized agile development methodologies and regularly communicated with the Tag Technologies team to ensure that project milestones were being met.
Process
The design process for the Tag Technologies website involved the following steps:
- Research: I conducted thorough research on the company’s products, target audience, and competitors. This helped me understand the company’s vision and objectives and create a design that reflected its unique identity.
- Wireframing: Based on the research, I created wireframes to visualize the website’s layout and structure. This allowed me to make adjustments to the layout and user flow before moving on to the design phase.
- Design: I created the design for the website, including the color scheme, typography, and overall style. I ensured that the design was visually appealing and user-friendly, keeping in mind the target audience’s preferences and needs.
- Development: Once the design was approved, I began the development phase. I developed the website using WordPress, Elementor and WooCommerce, ensuring that it was responsive and compatible with various browsers and devices.
- Testing: After the website was developed, I tested it extensively to identify and fix any bugs or issues. I made sure that the website was user-friendly and intuitive to navigate.
- Launch: Once the website was fully tested and ready, it was launched. I ensured that the website was optimized for search engines, and it was submitted to relevant directories and search engines.
Throughout the process, I kept in close communication with the Tag Technologies team to ensure that the design and development were aligned with their objectives and expectations.
Outcomes
The resulting website was a visually appealing and user-friendly platform that effectively communicated Tag Technologies’ brand and product offerings. The ordering system I implemented streamlined Tag Technologies’ service delivery process, enabling them to manage their services more efficiently and effectively.
Since the launch of the website, Tag Technologies has seen increased interest and engagement from potential customers. The website has helped establish the company as an innovative and reliable provider of RFID and NFC technology solutions, and has contributed to the company’s overall growth and success.
Lessons learned
Working on this project taught me the importance of understanding the target audience and their needs when designing a website. By conducting user research and developing user personas, I was able to create a website that effectively communicated Tag Technologies’ brand and product offerings to their target audience.
Additionally, the project taught me the importance of utilizing agile development methodologies to ensure that the project was progressing according to schedule and budget, while also allowing for flexibility and adaptability throughout the development process.
